Go for 2&5 WA Gymnastics Championships Postponed

Due to the fast evolving situation in Western Australia surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty as we head into one of our most prestigious events for the year, Gymnastics WA have made the very difficult decision to postpone this weekend's Go for 2&5 Western Australian Gymnastics Championships. This major event will now be rescheduled to take place on 11 - 13 June 2021.

This decision was made with much thought and discussion, and we hope the community understands the reasoning for this postponement. It is imperative for Gymnastics WA to ensure a safe environment for all attending the Championship event and with the current circumstances in WA, this could not be guaranteed. It is important for all competitors to train consistently leading up to a major competition, and due to the recent three-day lockdown, athlete training and preparation has certainly been disrupted. The continued restrictions across the state have also impacted the club's and coach's ability to prepare for this event.

With the current and unknown government restrictions regarding competition numbers and spectators that are in place and will come into effect on Saturday 1st May, it is not feasible for us to consider running this event. We acknowledge that athletes have spent a considerable amount of time preparing for this major event on the Gymnastics WA calendar and it is our aim to be in a position to allow for friends and family to be able to support the athletes at this annual key event but also to share celebrate the importance of the event with partners and stakeholders. This simply cannot occur for the coming weekend.

Gymnastics WA's Executive Director, Emily Randall states “Postponing the Go for 2 and 5 WA Gymnastics Championships is disappointing, but unavoidable. It is imperative all athletes are provided with an opportunity to compete at their best, and our first priority. We are hopeful the event will be able to showcase WA’s top gymnasts across all gymsports, and the new dates in June provide the best opportunity for this to occur”.

We understand that this news will likely be devastating for all involved however in postponing the event, we hope to still have the opportunity to deliver a successful major event that meets our high standards and the expectations of the community. With the current WA climate, this just would not be possible for this coming weekend.

Gymnastics WA staff are currently working to reschedule the Go for 2&5 WA Gymnastics Championships and further information will be shared directly with affiliated clubs in the coming week. Please pass this information on to your gymnastics community and updated schedules/work plans will be distributed to clubs in due course.
